Commentary by Jeff Worrell

In a world filled with diverse perspectives and experiences, respecting others’ views is a cornerstone of civility. It allows us to bridge differences, fostering understanding and empathy. However, respect alone is not always enough. Sometimes, disagreements or mistakes occur, and it is in these moments that forgiveness is a necessary next step.

Forgiveness is more than just letting go of resentment — it is an act of grace that reflects true civility. When someone wrongs us, the natural reaction may be to harbor bitterness or seek retribution. Yet, choosing forgiveness demonstrates strength and compassion. It shows that we value relationships over pride and are willing to move forward with kindness.

Moreover, forgiveness benefits not only the person being forgiven but also the one offering it. It frees us from the burden of anger and allows for personal growth. By forgiving, we acknowledge that everyone is human, capable of making mistakes and deserving of second chances.

In combining respect for others’ views with the willingness to forgive, we create a foundation for meaningful connections. Together, these virtues remind us that understanding and grace are vital tools for building a more civil society.
