As we wrap up another remarkable year in Carmel, we have much to be grateful for in our journey toward a more civil community. The past 12 months have shown that when we choose civility as our foundation, our community grows stronger and becomes more connected.

Last year marked a significant milestone with the launch of our citywide Civility Is A Choice initiative in January, inspired by contemporary thought leaders and embraced by residents across neighborhoods. We’ve seen this initiative take root in ways both large and small, from civil discourse at city council meetings to thoughtful interactions in our daily lives.

The progress we’ve made this year provides a strong foundation for the future. Our community has shown that civility isn’t just a goal — it’s a journey we’re taking together. Each respectful interaction, each moment of understanding and each act of kindness have contributed to making Carmel a more welcoming and civil place to live.

Perhaps what we can be most grateful for is the growing recognition that civility strengthens our community bonds. From the Monon Trail to our bustling Arts District, from our schools to our senior centers, the spirit of civility has enhanced our shared spaces and interactions.

As we close this year, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made while recommitting to the practice of civility. In Carmel, we’ve proven that when civility becomes a conscious choice, it transforms from an aspiration into a way of life — one that makes our community stronger, more resilient, and more connected with each passing day.
