Commentary by Jeff Worrell

In a world where opinions are often shouted and punctuated with expletives, and disagreements deteriorate into full-blown conflicts, it can be tempting to withhold the truth to steer clear of confrontation. However, civility doesn’t demand silence; it calls for the courage to speak the truth with kindness and grace.

Speaking the truth gently is a cornerstone of building respectful and harmonious relationships. It’s not about diluting honesty but about delivering it in a way that promotes understanding rather than division. Imagine discussing a tough subject with a friend. Choosing words that consider their feelings — without compromising the truth — can turn a potentially hurtful moment into a step toward growth.

Civility thrives when we recognize the humanity in one another, even when we disagree. We are all imperfect individuals with unique perspectives and emotions. By embracing kindness alongside honesty, we uphold the dignity of both the speaker and the listener.

Let’s make a habit of asking ourselves: How can I share this truth constructively? How can I leave space for compassion? These small adjustments can lead to big changes in our conversations, our communities and our lives.

So, the next time you find yourself with a difficult truth to share, consider this: Civility isn’t just what we say — it’s how we say it. And gentle honesty is always worth the effort.
